We Arrived!

After a long 9 hour flight, we finally arrived in Rome, Italy!  I experienced a lot of firsts on the plane---served dinner, received breakfast, given a pillow & blanket, and I actually had to use an airplane bathroom. :( But, we arrived early and only had to wait a little bit to get to a gate for our plane because there was a VIP departure for the Pope!  There were so many photographers and police escorts which was cool to see.
We have a 7 hour time difference here so we already finished a full day of sight seeing (which means we stayed awake!!) and everybody at home is just getting up.  Our hotel is absolutely beautiful and has so many chandeliers and detail.  We went to a little cafe to eat when we first got here and of course we had to get gelato since it was our first meal in Italy!  Tall, old buildings line the streets with random outdoor cafes in alley ways.  They are all so cute!
Every time we ride in a car I have a mini heart attack because they have no sense of lanes or speed limits.  So, basically all the cars just swerve around each other and surprisingly no accidents occur.  The cars are a lot smaller here and look so much different than cars we have.  Also, a lot of people ride mopeds or motorcycles to get around.
Today we visited the Coliseum, Forum, Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, and Trajen's Column.  The Coliseum was amazing to see.  I can't imagine how they made it with the materials they did and still included so much detail into everything.  I also enjoyed reading about its history and the fights that took place there.  The Forum was huge but it was cool to see all the buildings next to each other.  Spanish steps were long and unfortunately the fountain wasn't on.  :(  But, I took so many pictures so I'll share some with you guys:

It was a great first day and Rome is such a beautiful city!  Tomorrow we go to Vatican City and explore more of Rome!!
